Sitting on the beach so very long ago, he said with just enough concern, just enough caution, just enough respect.

No matter the scars that my eldest son contiues to provide on my wretched soul, being, heart; I cant fathom wiping away the person. He has walked out on his family, my grandkids, his children. He has stolen money, valuables, years from us. Removed the possiblity of having or exsisting in any kind of normal life. The lies, manipulations, curses and demands continue in a never-ending yarn of bulsshit and butterflies that die in the damn heat of a bright light.

I dont mind having to be the Dad. I just wanted to be the grandfther first. Thats pretty fair to ask, eh? But fair doesnt exsist. No, fair does not. Why? Because fair would mean that everywhere, everyone gets treated evenly, and that aint gonna happened. Asks the victims of any and all discrimination, hate, bigotry, whatevers. Fair wont come, because fair is 29% interest rates when you aint never late, fair is OK you are approved, ooops, sorry you aint. Fair is 88 hour work weeks nudged ever earning to nothingness due to a lack of respect, common decency, and truthfulness.

So many stares into the abyss of blackness that is what ends. What ends? The end of being. I dont claim to be the first nor the last that will assert that in doing anything you take chances. I guess having a kid is a chance taken; having one that forever breaks your being is one of them. I remember charging into waves that I cant describe, the feeling of just edging into that abyss, and controlling it, as well as the abyss consuming me. The happenchance of surviving a hold down; getting yet another set of stitches or what else I happened to fuck up on out in the blue.

Holding someones lifeless body under my care; and the what if's of the carnage that surrounds it. I stand in awe of the human spirit to survive. How many compressions in CPR before you crack the ribs of an elderly male whose exsistence is fleeting away? Not many. The dead stare. That one eye, dead stare from a young girl. Haunting my brain forever;and yet i think I have problems.

On days when boredom and regularness were aborted mid-shift by the call of a apartment on fire, and dragging a person out of that inferno only to feel the seared flesh ripping apart in my hands. But if he didnt die, all of us would have when the godamn Oxygen tank exploded right after the door closed after removing him. And the fucking door had a auto-close feature; what if it didnt?

After being awake for 24 hours wondering where the hell my son was, since he was 17 and high and drunk, having to go to work; and the first call is a childbirth. deliveing that child in a home where I dont know who lives there, and bringing anotherhuman into this world while mine begins a decent into hell?

Sucking the vomitus out of a baby whose parents were clueless to as to why their child was blue and not breathing? What of that persons life now? Are they happy? I pray so.

I want to quit so badly; I want to escape the damn taped images of shit-i-dont-want-to-remember. I hate to admit the jealousy I feel when I see such happy people/unions that I cant get to occur, no matter what effort I mount. It really disturbs me to feel that way; what the fuck is wrong with me? How can I feel that animosity to unknowns?

I guess I have lost respect of self in the life of living this.

The immense feeling of joy, happiness, complete and utter fascination with the grandkids only (yes, and Maile too) provides a respit to the challenges. I fear greatly that these small journeys will not hold up the onslaught of continued disappointments. Yet, they must.

Whats in the mirror now looks and walks; talks like me, but is nothing of what I am inside.

88 hour work week; and I flirted with taking a day off from the hotel to go with the family to the beach. Havent had a whole lot of time to surf of late (no shit sherlock!) So this was a nice respit, and a nice swell was running. Get to the beach and find my good bro Kohnster parking. Head out for a surfy with him, none to great, just too much wind and not enough open spaces (crowds)

Oh there were some good ones after a while, tho'.

I headed in from that little surf session w/ Kohn; and paddle boarded the kids around and spied a real nice left wave that kept going off....(see pic) So off I went.

The spot has a whole bunch of boulders outcropping to get into the water at. I knew this. I have done this rock dance a million times before. Of course, this time Karma said - "The fuck you are"...As I was going to jump in, a set of waves approached, and as luck has it (or not) I misjumped, wind caught my board, and I went ass over shoulders down in a heap.

i caught the back of my head (no blood, all good) Shoulder blade...Vana (urchin) spine in my toes, and one heck of a hole on the right side of my right knee, and down to the shin bone on the let side of my right knee.

Karma still wasnt through with me as yet.

Now that my entire surfing PRIDE was in a bag floating on the bottom of the ocean, I had to catch a few waves, fuck being sore, bleeding, or semi-concious (not; but it makes good reading, eh?) I quickly asses the damage, (eh, fuck it) and paddle into the not crowded line up.

Right off the bat a beautiful wave comes right for me, damn Karma! Thanks! All is forgiven!

It lines up, I drop in, just nothing but green blue wall for a great stretch.

Oh man, beautiful.

The wave starts to close out, so I kick out (launching the board over the back of the wave) and I follow it.

Unfortunately for my OKOLE (as Zilla knows; my ASS) the board AGAIN catches the breeze, floats below me in the air, I above it, and I land square on one of the skegs(fins under the board) I break it off completely, and have a black and blue ass to prove it.

I caught a few more till I really knew I better go in, and now I am limpimg around at the pink and FIRE with a crack in my upper shin bone, a 1/2 inch deep hole opposite of it and a black-n-blue ass.

I was having a shitty day. Things were not really running smoothly at all. I was irritable, sore and gimping around on a swollen knee. I had to get maile to school for the last day before Saturdays graduation.

The final parts of the house need to be done.

I needed to get to my Hotel job credit union; so i took the guys. They; needless to say, are a handful one at a time, and the 2 of them together is North and South Korea joined at the DMZ, shooting at each other over everything.

I had to stop the car and try to play Bill Clinton and create peace, but it didnt work.

So I ended up spanking them with my slipper.

I felt like a shit, and pretty much still do.

So we stopped on the way home at a little beach area to - 1) let them play and go nuts. and 2) have me chill the hell out.

I think it worked.

Finished my shift at FIRE this morning. Ran my okole home to pick up Maile for her work at her schools "fair" (another word for over priced crappy food and trinkets to support a over priced private school education since we have the monopoly on education here - affair) BUT I will shut up as they have for the most part treated our daughter with fairness and respect. For an all-girls school, Catholic, and !conservative!, some awfully attired ladies.

'Nuff of that small diatribe, and such. More than enough negatives in this world, so cut it.

So mutt - n - jeff and I hit the bouncers and jetsam for the day; the 2 guys spent about 2.5 hours bouncing in the damn things in 80 degree heat and ate a ton.

We stopped by the Manoa manapua place for pork hash, Manapua and time waste. Manapua's consumed = 6. At the fair - Hot Dogs, shave ice, and teri-burger. An order of disgusting Nachos as well.

50 pounds of sweat later, I dropped them off before coming to work at the wonderous pink hell.

2.5 hours of madness to go, and it will be happy hour, finally.

*Kekoa got accepted to Kaleo's Kamehameha pre school today as well; so the blessings are there; just gotta be thankfull - I am.

Suspended in mid-air, I remember falling. Falling forward as it was. The thing is, I had seen the cars headlights leaving the closing Chili's restaurant; I had actually thought about the chance of it being a drunk driver head the wrong way into my path down the one direction divided highway. When I hit the ground (over the handle bars, missing karanging my head by how? - tucking it in, I guess) I knew it was one of those "this is gonna hurt" moments in my life.

The resulting injuries (broken clavicle, fractured ribs front/back, road rash, and the late onset of fluid around my heart) was not the worst of it. I think the worst part was going over and over the fact of how close that was. It is funny how everytime I pass that area, I seem to remember floating in mid-air, right before the impact. I dont remember the hit; I do remember the pain, and almost blacking out. I remember riding the mo-ped the rest of the 8 miles home, trying to breathe; and not doing a very good job of that.

It was so close.

I wonder out loud what would be now, with the boys and Kiana, Maile; if things were not as fortunate?

It seems like when things get rotten in Denmark; that all that pain was nothing but an excercise in preperation for more pain.

So back in December; my boss at the old pink asks to have a "chit-chat". As in a chittin' and a chattin'. So I go like the good worker bee and sit down and chit and chat away. Basically, she enlightens me that - the hotel is going to cut hours; and that business has not been as profitable as hoped; and that changes, 'they be a coming"

I have done this shit at the old pink for 28 years, mind you. January 19, 1982 to be exact-a-mundo. Employee #26350. (They are in #52000 range now) And needless to say, i have seen a lota shit and done a lotta shit in those past 28 years. I became a fireighter, had 3 kids, 3 grandkids, had loved ones die, move away, and have manged to mangle myself in a assortment of water bourne - and - earth bourne ways.

When I became a recruit in HFD; i asked for 16 weeks of leave of absence to concentrate on what was to become my profession. And was granted it - after using all my vacation, of course. 2 weeks into the training (bust ass,tests, studying, etc) the boss asks if I can work 1 day on the weekends. Due to the fact that one of my fellow employees was pregnant, and could not work - doc's orders. So I say - whoa -I got this small thing called a carrer on the line. "But we dont have ANYONE to work; and its only 1 or 2 days on the weekend"

Famous last frikking words.

By the next week, I was working 5 days a week. I'd fininsh my recruit training at 5PM, hustle to my car, drive down to waikiki from the airport, throw all my books, ropes, study shit into a bag, and work till 1100PM. Then I'd drive home at midnight, study till 1 or 2, and wake at 6AM to get to training by 8. And do that for 16 weeks.

I made a deal w/ queenship; no surf, for the 16 weeks - cause you get hurt; you are out of the recruit class.

Me = Happy.

Not.

Anyhow; prior to this (1995) in 1990 I had gotten fired by the pink for a drunk guest writing a tip of 8 dollars that he meant to be 3. I wont go into all the bullshit that that entailed, but again, famous last words by yours truly after he got his job and back pay to the HR manager (who subsequently was "let go") were : "Yes it is FUCKING GREAT to be back" after the twat asked me if "I was happy to be back".....arggh.

Another anyhow, and to the present > After our little chit chat, I have the distinct feeling that the old "behind the back" pass over my senority was being conceived behind some closed doors.

Sure were.

I had been giving away the 8 hour shifts to the "lady" below me as this is her only job, needs insurance, blah blah blah. So Mr. nice (idiot) was giving her the hours. I still worked 4 5 or 6 days in a wed to wed schedule. The boss and her, knowing that the hours were going to get cut, magically moved her ABOVE me. Now I get nada for hours since January.

And a fine fuckyouverymuch or your kindness, Mark.

Not sooooooo fast kimosabe.

Bottom line the now are paying me back pay of ove 130 hours; premium short shift pay; I am where I belong on the schedule (I dont give NO hours away at all now) - and such is as it goes.

Best part is oneof the other employees was talking to my boss after I won the grieveance, and the boss says "Mark's tone seemed so upset at the meeting" to which she said - " well whatta you expect? You were wrong!"

...and like a dumbass, I'll probably feel sorry for her and give hours up after a while...
