Surfed. Kiana hula performance.

51 years old and I still cant get enough water time in my soul.

Caught some really good waves today - amazing the way this makes a difference in my brain.

Thank you; Mother Ocean.

They are coming to my dreams. All those calls.

This sure is not fun.

I (we) did my (our) best.

Leave me alone.

13.4.10

Floating

Suspended in mid-air, I remember falling. Falling forward as it was. The thing is, I had seen the cars headlights leaving the closing Chili's restaurant; I had actually thought about the chance of it being a drunk driver head the wrong way into my path down the one direction divided highway. When I hit the ground (over the handle bars, missing karanging my head by how? - tucking it in, I guess) I knew it was one of those "this is gonna hurt" moments in my life.

Kekoa; "Motorboat"

The resulting injuries (broken clavicle, fractured ribs front/back, road rash, and the late onset of fluid around my heart) was not the worst of it. I think the worst part was going over and over the fact of how close that was. It is funny how everytime I pass that area, I seem to remember floating in mid-air, right before the impact. I dont remember the hit; I do remember the pain, and almost blacking out. I remember riding the mo-ped the rest of the 8 miles home, trying to breathe; and not doing a very good job of that.

It was so close.

I wonder out loud what would be now, with the boys and Kiana, Maile; if things were not as fortunate?

It seems like when things get rotten in Denmark; that all that pain was nothing but an excercise in preperation for more pain.

Damn.

Tired.

Aloha.

Statement.

He kane au; he pua oe.

Do you remember when we first met
I sure do
It was some time
In early September
You were lazy about it
You made me wait around
I was so crazy about you
I didn't mind
So I was late for class
I locked my bike to yours
It wasn't hard to find
You painted flowers on
Guess that I was afraid
That if you rode away
You might not roll back
My direction real soon
Well I was crazy about you then
And now the craziest thing of all
Over 10 years have gone by
And your still mine
We're locked in time
Lets rewind

Do you remember
When we first moved in together
The piano took up the living room
You'd play me boogie woogie
I played you love songs
You'd say we're playing house
Now you still say we are
We build our get away
Up in a tree we found
We felt so far away
Though we were still in town
I remember watching
That old tree burn down
I took a picture that
I don't like to look at

Well all these times
They come and go
Alone don't seem so long
Over 10 years have gone by
We cant rewind
We're locked in time
But your still mine

Do you remember?

I Cant Hardly Wait - The Replacements

I'll write you a letter tomorrow
Tonight I can't hold a pen
Someone's got a stamp that I can borrow
I promise not to blow the address again

Lights that flash in the evening,
Through a crack in the drapes

Jesus rides beside me
He never buys any smokes
Hurry up, hurry up, ain't you had enough of this stuff
Ashtray floors, dirty clothes, and filthy jokes

See you're high and lonesome
Try and try and try

Lights that flash in the evening,
Through a hole in the drapes
I'll be home when I'm sleeping
I can't hardly wait

I can't wait. Hardly wait.

Kaleo -

What a great suprise
its been sometime
How have you been
can you come on in
Let me take your coat
to cover up the note
I wrote you yesterday
telling you the way

I am without you
Because I'd be lost forever
if you slipped away
Blue eyes your the reason
for my change
Blue eyes your the reason for my change

I'm doing alright
I was only driving by
and thought I'd say hello
Since you never called
have you thought at all
Is there anybody new
Cuz oh no what I'd do
without you

Because I'd be lost forever
if you slipped away
Blue eyes your the reason
for my change
Blue eyes your the reason
for my change

Honestly I feel
I won't heal
I just can't go on without you
I just can't go on without you

Because I'd be lost forever
if you slipped away
Blue eyes your the reason
for my change
Blue eyes your the reason
for my change
Blue eyes your the reason
for my change

These were dweebs. Serious dweebs.

7.3.10

Stuff

That can really piss me off; or as someone bette than i said - "that'll put sand in your shorts"

Doesnt piss me off...

So back in December; my boss at the old pink asks to have a "chit-chat". As in a chittin' and a chattin'. So I go like the good worker bee and sit down and chit and chat away. Basically, she enlightens me that - the hotel is going to cut hours; and that business has not been as profitable as hoped; and that changes, 'they be a coming"

I have done this shit at the old pink for 28 years, mind you. January 19, 1982 to be exact-a-mundo. Employee #26350. (They are in #52000 range now) And needless to say, i have seen a lota shit and done a lotta shit in those past 28 years. I became a fireighter, had 3 kids, 3 grandkids, had loved ones die, move away, and have manged to mangle myself in a assortment of water bourne - and - earth bourne ways.

When I became a recruit in HFD; i asked for 16 weeks of leave of absence to concentrate on what was to become my profession. And was granted it - after using all my vacation, of course. 2 weeks into the training (bust ass, tests, studying, etc) the boss asks if I can work 1 day on the weekends. Due to the fact that one of my fellow employees was pregnant, and could not work - doc's orders. So I say - whoa -I got this small thing called a carrer on the line. "But we dont have ANYONE to work; and its only 1 or 2 days on the weekend"

Famous last frikking words.

By the next week, I was working 5 days a week. I'd fininsh my recruit training at 5PM, hustle to my car, drive down to waikiki from the airport, throw all my books, ropes, study shit into a bag, and work till 1100PM. Then I'd drive home at midnight, study till 1 or 2, and wake at 6AM to get to training by 8. And do that for 16 weeks.

I made a deal w/ queenship; no surf, for the 16 weeks - cause you get hurt; you are out of the recruit class.

Me = Happy.

Not.

Anyhow; prior to this (1995) in 1990 I had gotten fired by the pink for a drunk guest writing a tip of 8 dollars that he meant to be 3. I wont go into all the bullshit that that entailed, but again, famous last words by yours truly after he got his job and back pay to the HR manager (who subsequently was "let go") were : "Yes it is FUCKING GREAT to be back" after the twat asked me if "I was happy to be back".....arggh.

Another anyhow, and to the present > After our little chit chat, I have the distinct feeling that the old "behind the back" pass over my senority was being conceived behind some closed doors.

Sure were.

I had been giving away the 8 hour shifts to the "lady" below me as this is her only job, needs insurance, blah blah blah. So Mr. nice (idiot) was giving her the hours. I still worked 4 5 or 6 days in a wed to wed schedule. The boss and her, knowing that the hours were going to get cut, magically moved her ABOVE me. Now I get nada for hours since January.

And a fine fuckyouverymuch or your kindness, Mark.

Not sooooooo fast kimosabe.

Enter the union. Enter senority. Enter what the fuck do you think you are doing?

Bottom line the now are paying me back pay of ove 130 hours; premium short shift pay; I am where I belong on the schedule (I dont give NO hours away at all now) - and such is as it goes.

Best part is oneof the other employees was talking to my boss after I won the grieveance, and the boss says "Mark's tone seemed so upset at the meeting" to which she said - " well whatta you expect? You were wrong!"

...and like a dumbass, I'll probably feel sorry for her and give hours up after a while...

Such the doofus.

Aloha

You'd think

After almost 4 decades, I'd be over this addiction.

Nope.

17.2.10

1 muffin, please.

We stopped at Barnes N Nobles one afternoon after school. You know how they have those display cases with all the goodies in their Cafe? Kaleo spootted it, and decided that he was hungry. Shoots.

"You want a Bagel, big guy?"

No.

"Well lets see what they got, huh?"

The talker

So we traipse over to the small line that is at the counter, he decides to window shop at the display case. He sees something, and with the Barista right behind where he is looking, he goes (very politely, yet very sure, and loud not over loud, but loud-E-Nuf)

"I'd like 1 MUFFIN, Please!"

(with his index finger pointing straight to the sky)

I almost pee'd meself.

Then he changed his mind.

"No, I'd like 1 COOKIE please"

(again with the index finger straight... (to the moon, Alice)

We got our cookie, and a drink and consumed.

The next day he is playing with his Lego's and quietly building and destroying worlds.

Cathy walks by and hears him say -

"I'll have a beer"

I dont even say that.

A couple days later, I am in the queens shower, scrubbing the walls with cleaner and in general trying to not get high from the odors.

He walks up after getting home from school and says -

"Hi Papa! Whatcha doing? Getting rid of all the germs?"

I am at such a loss with this guy.

He was up at 0420 this AM, and thats why I am typing. He is sleeping now with is Grammie, and I am now off to FIRE.

I'd just like to last a while in his childhood, and make better the things in this world, so that love, honor and respect can flourish all the days of our Keiki's lives.

15.2.10

"Absolutely!"

The Pinks propaganda of 'absolutely' has me absolutely pissed the hell off.

K. M. A.

Right around the end of last year, my boss at the hell asks for me to have a chit - chat. So I go in and she says blah blah blah and such - basically HINTS that hours are gonna be cut, now according to union rules, that means shit to me, since I have been here 28 years.

Long mother story short. The gal below me (whom i was giving the 8 hour shifts to on my own niceity, since it was her only job, insurance, blah blah blah) gets mysteriously jumped over me in senority on the next schedule.

Ummmmmmm.

You cant do that.

You cant also take my measly additional second job pay and cut it to 1 work day and a paycheck of 27 dollars (I put the bulk to savings and a small loan)

Because that'll piss me off.

And I'll have to go to the union, to get my back pay 112+ hours so far, (but whose counting? ... ME!)

And then I gotta be a dick and take all the hours when they say you cant do that to the boss, and the gal below will be bummed (Fuck you, I was being nice, not STUPID!)

Much rather be here.
K.M.A.

Anyhow.

We'll see soon enough.

I'll get to the " 1 Muffin please!....and 1 Cookie please!...I'll have a beer...and last but not least ..."You taking care of the germs, yeah, Papa?"...soon. Classic stuff.

Aloha.

Reservation request at Hotel De Hell tonight -

Salt Water Reasons

You cant put a price on what its like to put yourself into Mother Oceans arms.

I imagine it started a long time ago, probably when my Tutu Kane (grandpa) and my Dad threw me back and forth in the waters of Hanauma Bay.

I was scared shitless. I always had been of the ocean. All that life going on under that calm blue didnt fool me; the mother was waiting to yank me unde a drown my sorry ass. It did not care if I was 5 or 6 or whatever I was then. I remember even in first grade, that pic of the lobsters and crabs on the bulletin board, I'd walk as far away fom that shot, scared that the reptiles would clamp one of those claws around my throat and cease my exsistence.

With what life was like at that school, maybe it would have been better, but the conspiracy was set, I was to sufer awhile more until my life would change later, wetter, and for the better.

Me and Sean would peddle to Sandy's. We'd watch his brothers 8mm films of North Shore waves in the dark in his room. I'd freak the hell out when he'd charge out into the surf; and ask me why i didnt follow. He was one of the first people I confided in; I told him I was scared; he told me what the hell? You go nuts playing football, running and shit, and hiking the hills with me; how can YOU be scared?

I was.

We sat on the beach that dawn, watching the waves.

And he said this- "You watch that wave, you count how long in takes or it to break, wash to shore, and calmly run back to the ocean" - "and you tell me you cant hold your breath that long"

"and dont fucking panic, man, dont panic, and its all good"

And it was.

We were like 10 or 11.

40 years later, I stil cant explain what it is like; what it is like to get up, crack the dawn, head out, smell the ocean LIFE, the salt the spray.

Not knowing what the conditions will be like Great? Junk? Who knows? You went. You just went to the beach, surfed the anger out, flopped on the beach, burnt, exhausted, and so satisified with the entire world, that food didnt matter, getting high didnt matter, the demands didnt matter. Nothing. It was ALL GOOD.

You didnt die, you conquered something, somehow, someway. You experienced things sights and feelings that only you will know. Cause ever drop of water is different. Every single one.

Totally useless event in the worlds eye, but the whole world to me.

In facing some of the actions of the ocean; seeing what appears to be impending death headed to me, and surviving it, makes you stronger?

Nope.

It makes you thankful.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 and so on. Time will come when those numbers will have ended.

Perhaps maybe then my friends will feel fit to judge me

But when I meet my maker, there are 1 or 2 things I'd sure like to ask him

Apologies to Crash Test Dummies.

Aloha.
