Schooling...Shmooling

Private Schools Education In Hawaii

Honolulu has a variety of educational opportunities. The public school system is entrenched in bureaucratic bullshit, thereby screwing the kids education chances. If you WANT to learn in public schools here, you will, only if you generally are a go getter. The students range in ability, race, economic standing, like any other school. It just gets emphasized due to our small island home. The teachers as well, don’t get paid enough.

Not to diss public schooling, but it isn’t the greatest here. Scores, attitudes and general malaise inhabit a lot of corridors. It is sad, cause there are good kids out there.

So your alternative is private schools. I am a graduate of a private, all male, Catholic High. So was my Dad, Gramps, Uncle and assorted other familial folk. These are the private schools -

St. Louis High
Damien Memorial
Punahou
Kamehameha
Iolani

These are the primary schools in the private realm. The first 2 are all male, and Catholic. The Kamehameha Schools is Protestant, and requires Hawaiian Blood to attend. Punahou is an elite, huge missionary founded enclave. Iolani is elite, private, and mega-expensive.

Ok so that prelude is done.

The school Maile interviewed for today was Kamehameha. It was founded in 1887 by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. In her will, it states that the school is founded for the betterment of the Hawaiian Children. Indigenous, orphaned are assisted first. The school is funded by the will; and Bishop Estate. Bishop estate is the largest landowner in the state. (Lets put it like this – You live on an island; you own land; you are wealthy) So her trust/will funds the school, and by that the tuition is MUCH less than the others. It is about 1200 to 1500 a year or semester, I forget.

Basically the others START at about 10K a year. Yep. 10K.

So it is competitive to get in. Kamehameha tames the crowd by the Hawaiian Blood quantum need. It may sound racist, or exclusionary, but think on this –

A very long time ago, it was 2 shiny nails for –

Women.
Pork.
Fresh Water.
Sandal Wood.
Land.
Fish.

Sorry. I will explain that outburst someday.

So the Maile-girl isn’t a top notch student. She has a real cool attitude, and never ever quits. She isn’t prone to moodiness, or cockiness. (Amazing, yeah?, considering, well, you-know-who) The test scores cant give a real insight into a persons demeanor, so her best asset, expressing, is put out on interview.

She was all stoked afterwards, and had a beam of joy escaping out her ears.

So now we wait, and that’s cool. She tries her best, and as a parent, that is all I can ask.

Aloha.

I KNEW Hamel would beat me on this one!! (And so he should-he seems to be the bestest teacher there is)

I like this:

Good luck to her, and you. Keep us posted!!

Good luck, Maile!!!

The state of education! That could start some blogging rants! I come from a family of educators, and was totally unprepared for the roller coaster ride. Jack's not even in kindergarten!
If I was independently wealthy, I would start up my own school. Or maybe I'd buy an island instead.

Oh good luck to Maile!! My boys are blessed enough to go to KSMaui, I pray all the time that my twins will get in too, even though they have been slower in every way, speech delay and everything. It happens, though.
I'm sure personality counts for a lot.
Tell her she's got internet folks rooting for her! Go Maile!

Ten grand, ten frapping grand? You can go to state colleges for a third of that here in Missouri.

I admire you for wanting the best education for your children, especially since it is so costly there.

I’m still reeling from the tuition fees.

Here’s hoping Maile has it nailed, keep us posted.
